Why you should replace your air filter this winter

December 13, 2016

We emphasize regular maintenance on your heating and air conditioning equipment frequently, but this doesn’t only mean ongoing tune-ups – it also involves checking your air filters. It’s a quick way to help keep your system running smoothly and improve your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it all yourself! Today is the perfect time to check your filter, as the cold season comes to an end and the warmer weather is on the horizon. There are many benefits to getting a replacement air filter, such as:

Lengthening the life and efficiency of your system
A surefire way to trigger a system interruption is a dirty air filter. Additional dirt that accumulates on your filter can influence your whole system to work harder than it should to keep your home cool. Not only will it impact the performance of your system, but it can impact your utility bills and result in your system overheating.

Enhancing indoor air quality
The goal of an air filter is that it snatches contaminants through your air system before it flows into your home. After the filter has been in for a while, the less efficient it is in catching things like dust and mold that can affect the health and comfort of your house, which is even more critical if someone in your house suffers from allergies or asthma. With warmer temps coming up, pollen and mold are especially likely to be hanging around and you certainly don’t like the idea of it moving in your indoor space. A quality, clean air filter will help your household breathe easy and remain healthy throughout allergy season.

Examine your system or ask your HVAC technician for recommendations on how regularly you should be putting in a replacement filter. For most filters through H&C Heating and Cooling, we advise an annual change with the highest MERV filter that is offered. Not sure if it’s the best time to change your air filter?
