Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your House

July 10, 2020

When it’s a hot summer afternoon in Laurel, nothing feels worse than realizing your AC isn’t functioning the way it should. The last thing you want to do is request HVAC service. But your AC is a pretty complicated system, so it can be hard to discern what’s causing the problem solo.

That’s why H&C Heating and Cooling wrote this handbook to help you understand what could be going on with your cooling system. From here, you’ll see some usual explanations for why your space is feeling a little too warm. And while a few of these are straightforward DIY tasks, you might still need to bring in a professional for AC repair.

And if that’s the case, H&C Heating and Cooling is ready to assist. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your home in Laurel.

1. Your Device Settings Are Off

Every person sets their thermostat a bit differently to work with their distinct requirements. Even so, a number of homeowners make the mistake of setting their device to “On” rather than “Auto.” Because of this setting, the fan in your system will continue to push out air even once you’ve achieved your preferred temperature.

This can look like your air conditioner releasing untreated air, when actually it’s only utilizing the fan more often than required. Swap this setting and work out if things are different.

2. Your Air Conditioner Needs to Be Cleaned

There are two central areas to look for dirt or dust accrual when your AC doesn’t appear to be functioning well.

Firstly, inspect your AC system’s filter. If you don’t swap out your filter on a regular basis, built-up dust can make it more challenging for air to pass through and lower the temperature your home. If your filter is clearly dirty or dusty, it’s probably time for a change. (And as a rule, you should change it about once every three months at the very least.)

If your filter appears fine, move to your external unit. Double check there’s a reasonable amount of space around it and clear away plants or litter close by. This element of your home comfort system discharges the heat from within your home. If the coils outside are clogged, you won’t be feeling cool in your home.

We suggest setting professional air conditioner maintenance annually to keep your unit operating smoothly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your Unit is Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the substance that conditions the air in your house. It runs between your internal and external units to absorb and release heat, to help your space remain comfortable. If there is a break somewhere, you won’t be comfortable again until you book professional air conditioning repair.

Signals of a refrigerant leak include a decrease in conditioned air, pricier energy expenses, frozen evaporator coils and strange hissing noises originating from your HVAC.

If you suspect refrigerant might be leaking, call H&C Heating and Cooling for system repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be damaging to your family’s health.

4. One or More Parts Need to Be Replaced

Your AC is made up of a few key elements. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If any one of these is not working as it should, your home comfort declines.

Our H&C Heating and Cooling experts are trained and experienced in HVAC. They can help you figure out and fix any trouble.

5. Your System Needs to Be Replaced

If your air conditioner is upward of 10 years old, it could be time to look into new air conditioner installation. As your system ages, it just won’t function as well as it has in the past. And it might be making your house less comfortable.

If your HVAC unit is newer but still isn’t keeping you cool, it might be undersized for your household. Air conditioners are not all the same size. An AC that’s undersized simply can’t help a house the way an accurately sized AC can.
