Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely made it through winter in Laurel just yet. Mother Nature has provided us with a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall may bury your air conditioner in the snow, diminishing its performance when the temperatures finally warm up for the season. Not to mention it can inhibit a high-efficiency system from running as such. The situation could become an even larger problem too if you don’t prepare for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to help your air conditioner operate properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the upcoming days and weeks.

  1. Maintain a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Walk around the area routinely to be sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that may have accumulated through the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, covering your air conditioner could end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner could be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, possibly meaning damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Laurel will probably swing up and down over the last few days of colder temperatures, you can’t count out the chance of weather that can impact the performance of your air conditioner. At H&C Heating and Cooling in Laurel, we are always available to check any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re in regards to air conditioner service or adding a new system.
